Piano Adjudicator

Dennis Lee, BMus, MMusRCM, LRSM, ARCM

Penang-born Dennis Lee, at age 14, won an Associated Board scholarship to study piano and violin at the Royal College of Music, London. While there, he won many prizes, including the Tagore Gold Medal for the most outstanding student, as well as gaining the BMus degree (London University) with first class honours, and MMusRCM. An Austrian Government scholarship then took him to the Vienna Akademie where he won the Diploma with Distinction and the Stepanow Prize.

Other competition prizes have come from the BBC, Casagrande, Busoni and Sydney. Concert performances have taken him to most continents, and he has performed with orchestras e..g. the BBC, Halle, Warsaw Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, RAi Milan, RAI Naples, Adelaide Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony, New Zealand Symphony under conductors like Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Colin Davis etc.

For more than 30 years he examined for the Royal Schools of Music, judged at the Canadian Music Competition Finals, and also the London International Piano Competition. He has broadcast often for the BBC. In the USA he has appeared at the Kennedy Center, National Gallery, Phillips Collection, Dumbarton Oaks (Washington D.C.), Merkin Hall (New York), San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia etc.

His recordings of Szymanowski (Hyperion/ Helios CDH 55081) and Debussy (iCSM 007) have attracted wide acclaim.  So has his series in France of the complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas.

He was Artist in Residence at the convention of the Music Teachers' Association of California, and also at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. With his wife Toh Chee Hung, he was invited to perform at the Singapore National Museum in conjunction with a loan of Impressionist paintings from Paris, with the Singapore Symphony to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Esplanade Cultural Centre, and also a duo recital to mark the 50th year of Singapore's nationhood. Recent recitals were in the UK, Florence, Italy, and Thailand.

He continues his busy schedule of performing masterclasses and judging festivals and competitions all over the world.  He is a Steinway Artist.
